Griffith University Health Sciences Certificate - Student Reflections

Posted on February 24th, 2009 in Partnerships | No Comments »

Studying the Health Studies Certificate at Griffith not only offers us a fast track for a range of University studies, and helping us to prepare for future health professions and careers, it is certainly a great experience for further understanding of university style of teaching. The two weeks of Biophysics summer course, provided us with very compacted teaching, allowing us to clearly learn something new and interesting everyday. I would have no hesitation in recommending anyone who is considering it, to do the Griffith Health Studies Certificate next year. Peter - Year 12

Initially, I was slightly worried about not being able to do the work and ending up looking silly. Luckily we had a lecturer who was really helpful and everyone was willing to help each other if there were certain things that someone else didn’t understand. The transition from our style of learning, to a more independent style was seamless for most of us, which I think was really assisted by the support we got from the university staff, especially Ricardo, our lecturer. Overall it was a really challenging experience. I’m not a huge fan of maths, but the physics side of the course got me really interested. I recommend that anyone who is interested in it give it a go, because it was a great program! Maddee - Year 12

Student Report - Griffith Health Orientation Week

Posted on March 19th, 2008 in Partnerships | No Comments »

Ever wanted to feel like you were at Uni without having to face the nerves of the first day??   Then attending an Orientation Day is great. I attended the Orientation Day for Dental Science and I am now more eager than ever to get into the course and ultimately the industry. We arrived at the new GH1 building of Griffith located next to the Gold Coast hospital and were welcomed with smiling faces by the staff from the university. We started like every other first year Uni student and were given endless amounts of information about the course, health requirements and loads more.

After a few ‘get to know you’ games it was time to divide into smaller groups and get to know the others and work together in fun activities and interesting tours. A highlight of the day was the creation of the Sydney Olympics. We worked together as a small group to create different aspects of ‘Olympics’ by using pink sheets of wax and interesting dental utensils. This was to give an insight into what students who are studying Dental Tech can experience.

The day was great and very informative, I have made new friends that can help me out when I start and I understand more about what this course entails. Next year’s Yr 11’s should definitely attend a day of their desired career choice (you also receive a free goodie bag).
One word to sum it up, GREAT!

Student Report - Pharmacy Orientation

Posted on March 9th, 2008 in Partnerships | No Comments »

Imagine suddenly being thrown into a lecture theatre wearing your school uniform with around fifty first year Pharmacy students, all ecstatic about finally completing High School and about to begin their Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science Degree at Griffith University. This was certainly something I had never dreamt I’d be doing. The options we could choose from were Psychology, Dentistry and Oral Health, Nursing and Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Exercise Science, Public Health and finally Pharmacy.  I applied to participate in the Pharmacy day.

The day began with the head of the Pharmacy school, Nerida Smith, welcoming all the new pharmacy students to their course and highlighting important issues they would face throughout their time at the University. She explained to everyone that they were now health professionals.  Wow! What a wake - up call! Read the rest of this entry »

Student Report - Physiotherapy and Exercise Science Orientation

The orientation lecture for students, about to commence the Bachelor of Physiotherapy, was a great insight for the 11 students from the Academy, into the expectations, commitments and course outlines of the degree. The 11 students who attended the lecture were inspired by the speeches and other medias presented.  The students are hopeful that they can relive this moment in two or three years time from now, when it is their time to be introduced to their future degrees.

Students are now able to join the Griffith University Library for an annual fee of $25.  This allows them access to the general Library collection and limited access to on-line resources.  They may also make use of any material within the Library.  Students and parents should be aware that lost and overdue items will incur financial penalties.  For further information students should ask at the QAHS ISC for application forms.  These forms may be found on the G drive at school under Curriculum/student common/library/Griffith University Library borrowing.
