Creating our physical future through a virtual lens

If you had the opportunity to create a healthy ‘utopian’ and ideal world, what would it look like and how would it feel? Students from all around Queensland will have such an opportunity in Queensland Academy for Health Sciences Creative Challenge, 2009 - Part of the Year of Creativity

Throughout the month of May, students are invited to enter ‘My Virtual World’, (DETA’s Smart Classrooms trial VW), to work collaboratively in designing and creating what they consider important for their futures and a Queensland that is strong, green, smart, healthy and fair. This Creative Challenge supports the Q150 and ‘Towards Q2’ initiatives.

Queensland’s 150th year signifies it as a state in its own right, with its own identity. The ‘Towards Q2’ initiative addresses ways forward for Queensland to sustain a strong, green, smart, healthy and fair future in a global climate of change. ‘Creating Virtual Q2’ will allow students from Years 5 - 12 to make informed decisions in addressing these challenges and what better people to have a voice than those who will actually be young adults (21-27 years old) in 2020 and the driving force in the decisions for our communities at that time.

What might our students come up with? What are their ideals in designing and creating a strong, green, smart, healthy and fair community? Do they consider being socially and mentally healthy an important factor in their community? How will they govern the community? What will it look like? How might they sustain it?

Developing the concept to enable students to participate

During March, 25 Year 10 Queensland Academy for Health Sciences’ students will assist in developing the entry point to the virtual world. (The students will undertake this task as part of their Ethics unit entitled ‘The ethical responsibility of the government to its citizens and the citizens to their community’, which forms part of the ‘Theory of Knowledge’ or TOK program studied at the school.) These students will be developing the skills to become the key ‘guides’ and ‘leaders’ to assist all students in the virtual world.

How does it work?

Using the ‘Brain Sanctuary’ (as pictured below) as the entry point to ‘My Virtual World’, students will immerse themselves in the rich media and facts about the challenges in the five key areas. Students will brainstorm their thoughts, ideas and ways to address these challenges on virtual ‘sticky note’ boards in order to consider, think and decide how to start creating their ‘utopian’ world. Interesting and challenging concepts will be posed in a virtual world where everyone can choose what they look like through their avatars, fly and be teleported instantly to their desired destinations yet challenged by searching for the objects that best suit their requirements to create their world.
