2017 Queensland Oztag Tri-series
Well done to Year 11 QAHS student Piper Wells who competed in the Queensland Oztag State Cup and the subsequent Oztag tri-series which resulted in her selection for the Queensland State Team. This is an outstanding achievement and the whole of QAHS congratulates Piper!
Please see below for Piper’s reflection:
“After attending Qld Oztag state cup on March I was selected to advance to the next stage of competition, The Qld Oztag tri-series, where three teams verse one and other over two days of competition. On the 16th of June I attended as a part of the Barbarians team. I travelled to the Sunshine Coast attending a training day first, where I met my team members for the first time, and then two days of games which would determine the tri-series winner for 2017. It was a great experience and I learnt a lot,. My team and I were able to effectively play together as we adjusted to each other’s style and gained experience playing together. Additionally the tri-series tournament is also used to select competitors for the Queensland State team. Official selectors watch each game and select players to advance once again. Fortunately after returning home once the tournament ended and the country Mavericks took home the winning title, it was announced that I had been selected. However there were problems in organising the national tournament this year so I will not be playing again, instead the announced Qld team was labelled a ‘merit team’.
Overall, I enjoyed my time at Tri-series where the competition was fierce and I played against competitors of a high level, learning and practising new skills that can help me become a better player. I hope to return to the tri-series next year and perform to the best of my ability.”
