During the school holidays, Claire Muir-Smith travelled to Papua New Guinea to hike the Kokoda Track as part of the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program.
The Kokoda Track delivered an authentic experience with lingering humidity, radiant heat, torrential rain, messy mud, steep inclines & slippery descents on narrow trails as well as traversing river and creek crossings that demand complete focus. Claire carried approx. 15 kilograms and engaged in many cultural activities with the local peoples of PNG. She left the country after an incredible experience, developing a new appreciation for the Courage of our young diggers and the enormity of their endurance and sacrifice. The depth of mateship bonds formed throughout challenging moments was extraordinary. The ability to ride a bump with a grin and smile through adversity is a true gift, and one that Claire will utilise throughout her IB journey and beyond.
Claire now embarks on several months of community service before graduating from the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program. QAHS congratulates Claire on her hard work, dedication and perseverance.
