The Gold Coast Junior Council meetings are always informative, interactive, motivating, practical and inspiring. The July meeting saw our Year 10 councillors representing QAHS, as our Year 11s were away on camp. The day started with schools arriving with donation packs for Gold Coast Youth Services, to be given to disadvantaged and homeless youth on the Gold Coast. We'd like to extend our gratitude to the QAHS community for the generous donations which helped in the creation of these packs. The day consisted of presentations by the Executive Council members, Gold Coast Youth Services and a workshop on entrepreneurial skills from the social enterprise group, Young Change Agents. Our Year 10 council representatives reflect on the meeting below:

“For me, the highlight of the day was the Young Change Agent workshop, which centred around the social entrepreneurship skills which can help youth, from all backgrounds, to turn problems into opportunities. We were introduced to the concept of Design Thinking, which is a strategy that can be used to redefine problems and seek possible solutions under the surface of the issue. In the end, Rihanna and I got to share the idea for our final project and pitch this to all Junior Council members. It was a very valuable and inspiring workshop, which made me realise the importance of social enterprise skills in creating positive changes in the community."  - Yanyan Zhang

“I had the amazing opportunity to attend the third Junior Council meeting of the year, earlier this month. This meeting was a great way to engage in hands-on activities with new people. It was great to see friends from previous meetings, as well as making many new ones! Our focus for the meeting was on a specific goal which was decided by our group. We focused on ensuring clean waters on Gold Coast beaches. I learned so many new facts and it was a wonderful way to develop my leadership skills in a larger group context. The highlight of the day was my group’s pitch. We got to stand up on stage at HOTA and deliver a humorous and engaging speech, persuading our audience why our product should be used. Overall, it was another amazing day with Gold Coast Junior Council and I learned so much!” – Rihanna Patel
