We had an overwhelming expression of interest from students and staff for our Community Garden this year which is a CAS experience service activity. After such a successful year in 2019 and with the garden coming alive bringing so much joy to our QAHS community, there was a large demand from students to be part of this group for 2020. We have 32 keen gardeners this year whom have been allocated into groups of 4-5 students per garden bed. We have nine garden beds, eight allocated to students and one for staff.
Students were asked to do some research in relation to what they would like to plant in their beds in alliance with the season. Once this information was supplied planting day was set for Thursday 27 February 2020. We also reached out to Bunnings Warehouse at Southport for some advice with our garden in which they responded with some donations of supplies to get our garden beds ready for planting. Grace and Kellie from Bunnings also joined us on our planting day to help plant and share their knowledge with our students.
It was a successful day and our seeds are already sprouting.
"Last week, on Thursday we had our first Community Garden planting day of the year! After school the group gathered and, after a small talk from Mr Mitchell, we were introduced to Grace and Kylie from Bunnings Warehouse who had offered to come and help us out with the planting and also donated some planting supplies.
The afternoon was very successful, with all nine garden beds planting their seeds. I especially had a great learning experience, as I had no knowledge of how to even plant seeds. We had to work out how deep the seeds had to be in the soil and how far apart they had to be depending on what we were planting so that they could sprout and have the best chance to grow." - Annie Allsopp - Year 11
