Firstly, I want to congratulate and thank students for their efforts at the QAHS Cross Country event. The atmosphere and participation rates were exceptional – well done to our competitive races, fun run participants, art competitors, helpers and our amazing staff for their efforts on the day. Congratulations to our members of Ignis House who were the house champions on the day!

QAHS Academic Athletes

We endeavour to acknowledge the tremendous range of sporting achievements by students at QAHS. Please see below a list of recent sporting accomplishments:

Natasha Lynch – Athletics and Power Lifting

Fresh off the back of the National Athletics Championships in Sydney, Natasha competed in the U18 Women's Hammer Throw event. With a powerful throw of 56.33m, Natasha took home the Bronze medal – achieving a PB by 1.10m. She then competed in the U17 Discus where Natasha placed 9th with a throw of 34.56m. In the Open Women's Hammer, Natasha qualified for the finals and came away with 8th place against the best in the country with a throw of 48.58m. Just another PB to add to the list for this talented student.

At the State Weightlifting Titles, in Nambour, Natasha competed in the youth 71kg category where she won the gold medal. Natasha lifted 55kg in the Snatch and then lifted 75kg in the Clean & Jerk. Overall, Natasha lifted a 6kg PB which was a combined total of 130kg.

Lastly, we are extremely excited to share that Natasha has been selected to represent Australia at the upcoming Oceania Athletics Championships in Mackay. A phenomenal achievement!

​Riko Danjo – Golf

In the school holidays, Riko competed at the Australian Junior Amateur at The Vines Golf Club in South Australia. She was up against some of the most talented young golfers in Australia and registered a best round score of 75 (+2) on Day Two of the Amateur event. Sporting an impressive handicap of 0.5, Riko is a highly dedicated golfer and one to watch in the future. Overall, Riko finished 22nd in the Tournament. Well done Riko – we can't wait to follow your golfing journey!

Lawson Shirley - AFL

We are pleased to share the news that Lawson was recently selected in the final squad for the U16 Gold Coast SUNS Academy. Lawson is a versatile mid-fielder with a strong work ethic both on and off the field. He will now play a role for the U16 SUNS academy side which will compete at the 2022 NAB National Development Carnival later this year. Congratulations Lawson and we look forward to seeing you in the red and yellow.

James Matthews – Cycling

Year 10 student James Matthews recently competed at the 2022 Track National Championships in Brisbane. He competed in many events and did himself and Queensland very proud. The highlight for James was the U17 team pursuit, the Queensland team qualified with the fastest time and got through to the Gold medal final. In the final they were just beaten by fractions of a second and came away with the Silver Medal. On the last day of the competition, James competed scratch race qualifier and qualified for the final and came 11th. A massive achievement as this is his first year in this age category.  Kailey Cooke – OZTAG

After a stellar 2021 season (top try-scorer) for her local team, Kailey carried this form into the recent Queensland Senior State Cup. She was a key contributor for her team, which resulted in Kailey's selection in the U18 Ladies Queensland Rebels team. Kailey and the Rebels are now set to compete in the 2022 Queensland Oztag Super Series. We wish you all the very best Kailey at the next level!

Mia Bergh – Australian Track and Field Championships, Sydney

Our resident Race Walker, Mia Bergh has returned from Nationals after an extensive preparation period. Results below:

Event: U18 Women's 5000m Race Walk

Placing: 11th

Time: 28.46.87

Celeste Nutley and Isabella Danaher (QAHS Alumna) – Surf Life Saving Aussies

Our courageous Surf boat rowers, Celeste and Isabella, have returned after competing at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships at North Kirra. Celeste and Isabella created history, and are now Australian Champions! Incredible performance, especially after flipping the boat in the 3rd round of competition. The conditions were extremely tough on the day.

Event: U19 Women's Surf Boat Race (competing for the Currumbin Chilli Pepperz)

Placing: 1st

Madeline Howell – State and National Swimming Championships

Madeline recently competed at both State and National level in Swimming. We are very proud of your efforts Madeline, please see the results below:

Event: Queensland School Swimming Championships (in Brisbane)

50 Backstroke: 4th 

100 Backstroke: 5th 

200 Backstroke: 6th 

South Coast Medley Relay: 4th 

Event: National Age Swimming Championships (in Adelaide)

50 Backstroke: Finalist 

100 Backstroke: Semi-finalist

What an extensive and outstanding list of sporting achievements from a variety of sports that our students participate in here at QAHS.
