A team of enterprising Year 10 and Year 11 students have made QAHS history by entering the Queensland Senior Schools Volleyball Cup held at Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium on the weekend. The team, formed this year, has sourced a coach to work with them on their game play, engaging in just seven team coaching sessions prior to the Competition.

Teamwork is integral to success in volleyball and team spirit is palpable among this group of players. They can be found on Fridays on the Green Heart volleyball net, playing to the late afternoon hours. Those watching the team in action during the competition reported the tremendous level of camaraderie among the team in supporting one another.

Congratulations to the team for placing in the top four of its Senior School division. Team members:

Dylan Cerantola
Peter Kim
Riley Knowles
Matteo Lai
Naughton Lovell
Garlok Lu
Aidan Maltby
Sabien Serbanescu

Drawing teams from all over Queensland, the competition is at the elite level. Team member, Year 10 student Sabien Serbanescu, provides the competition report.

Day 1 – Friday 7 August:
We had a nice warm up and quick win against Shailer park for our first game and then went into an extremely close match with Rochedale that we tied and an unlucky loss to Redlands that afternoon because we were too tired.

Day 2 – Saturday 8 August:
Our second day was an amazing success where we beat Aviation, Mansfield and Calamvale, placing us in the top four bracket.

Day 3 – Sunday 9 August:
We had a gruelling first game against Rochedale that we needed to win to proceed to the gold medal match which we lost so very closely. Sadly, for our bronze medal match afterwards we had a close loss to The Gap which placed us in fourth place just barely missing out on the bronze medal.

Our coach agrees we played really well with only seven sessions of training.

Thank you to Keigo Seki for photographing game moments.
