Discover Jiangsu – International Youth Leaders to China 2015

Sally Lee and Jessy Barber share their experience discovering Jiangsu earlier this term.  Details of the trip can be found at  http://qahs.eq.edu.au/theyre-off-to-discover-jiangsu/

“Calling upon all of my momentous recollections, ones of both hardship, joy and amazement, one outstanding feature remains unambiguous – the variety of and necessary adaptions to differences I have witnessed and undergone. The Discover Jiangsu program, seamlessly conducted with an unparalleled expertise by the JESIE (Jiangsu Educational Services for International Exchange) team has delivered me the opportunity to experience China for the first time. I did not know anyone, not recognise anyone and not have any prejudiced connection to anyone at the beginning of the trip. But, as time so magically passed, by virtue of the exquisite ventures through the temples, gardens, shopping streets and even the meals, I was opened to the one thing I had become so intrigued by, difference. Difference in cultures and personality. The context of this trip meant acquainting myself with eight other countries, including Canada, The USA, Spain, The Netherlands, Poland, Italy and South Korea, all nationalities whose cultures and personalities I had hardly understood or truly been immersed in. All people I never dreamed I would be blessed to be surrounded by. But through the discovery of the Jiangsu province, this dream has become a tremendous reality of positivity and excitement for all future possibilities such as travelling, working or studying with the friends I made during the trip. This program has given me perhaps the opportunity of once in my lifetime, to meet and share the cultures with other students from different countries, and experience the Jiangsu province together first-hand. Although I was hesitant at first whether I should go or not because of the reason that I knew no one there, I’m glad that I didn’t let go of the opportunity that now I know that I’ll definitely go for again if I had the chance.”

“The JIANGSU Discover China trip was, and always will be, one of the most influential and life changing experiences of my life. Before the trip I had hardly an idea of what to expect in China, however what an experience it was to experience such an immense and rich culture at the heart of China. Experiencing such a diverse and authentic society really opened up my eyes to the joy of travelling to other countries and experience new cultures. I believe that this trip has truly opened up my love for China and urge to visit again as soon as possible.

The benefits I have gained from this trip are so numerous in number and invaluable to say the least. The friends I have made are life long and of eight different ethnicities and cultures. Experiencing China together was something that I will never forget. The landmarks of Shanghai, Suzhou and Nanjing were absolutely astonishing both in size and nature and the sheer amazement of places such as the Bund in Shanghai, and the University of Nanjing are somewhat engraved into my memory.

The trip has only greatly encouraged my interest in the study of China and its language, and has inspired me to achieve well in school and visit again in the near future.
