Excellence in State Schools
Established by the Department of Education, Training and Employment in 2000, the Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools are presented annually to state schools with excellent practices that significantly improve outcomes for students. The awards aim to:
- Recognise, celebrate and reward excellent practices in Queensland state schools,
- Foster a learning culture that supports sharing of excellent practice,
- Create professional development opportunities through sharing practice with peers and the education community, and
- Promote public education.
This year QAHS submitted in three categories of the Awards:
In the Showcase Award for Excellence in Leadership:
Learning to Lead @ QAHS is a supportive leadership culture for the QAHS community of students and staff through dynamic training programs that enhance leadership skills of the participants who are then empowered to make a difference. QAHS developed a program of Key Leadership events, a leadership curriculum for all Year 10 students, a staff Leadership Enrichment Action Program (LEAP@QAHS) and extensive leadership opportunities through its CAS program, MLC and House system. All QAHS students are involved in leadership training that sees students participate in real leadership roles whilst at school and beyond.
In the Showcase Award for Excellence in the Senior Years:
It’s all about ME! is personalised, visible learning in action and underpins the learning and teaching philosophy and methodology at the Queensland Academy for Health Sciences. It’s all about ME! ensures all are focussed on maximising student results. It’s all about ME! is implemented through the QAHS TARGET 40+ program which details all student and teacher Goal Setting, Targets, Actions, Analysis, Support and Activities that focus on academic achievement. Continued improved student outcomes include QAHS as the top performing school in Queensland in 2013.
In the Showcase Award for Excellence in Innovation:
Symphony of Teaching and Learning is about school
communities working towards ensuring there is high quality teaching focussed on the achievement of every student and Great Teachers = Great Results. The program is centred on improving student learning and provides teachers with a comprehensive range of agreed contemporary teaching strategies and resources that support curriculum intent, engage students and maximise available technology.
The regional Showcase event was held this week and whilst we were not a winning school this year, we have much to celebrate around these programs and the other great work that staff do that makes a very real difference for student experiences and their academic and non-academic outcomes.
