QAHS Maestro – finalist in the Queensland College of Teachers Excellence Awards
We congratulate our Music Teacher and CAS Coordinator Mr Mark Turpin as a finalist in the 2014 QCOT Excellence in Teaching Awards.
As the conductor of the Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra for the past 14 years, Mr Mark Turpin’s extensive professional and community involvement in both the orchestra and musical theatre brings industry knowledge and skills to his role as a music teacher. Students benefit from his extensive arts network with world-class musicians visiting the campus for student workshops and opportunities for extension in community performances. Mr Turpin operates an outstanding “one man band”, as the only full-time member of the staff teaching the International Baccalaureate Diploma Music Programme (IBDP), coordinating the Instrumental Music Program with visit teachers and a vast array of student stage performances, coordinating the Creative, Action and Service component of the IBDP teaching Theory of Knowledge and being a Mentor Learning Group teacher. His achievement of his digital pedagogical licence has ensured his ICT practices are current and enrich the music program, and he effectively uses IBDP data to inform his planning, delivery and assessment.
Mr Turpin attended Parliament House in Brisbane on World Teachers’ Day Friday 31 October for the presentation ceremony.
