QAHS winning Netballers!

The QAHS Open Girls Netball Team are the Central Cluster Champions for the second year in a row, defeating Miami in a very close match 32-31 on the last sport cluster day.  This meant the girls were going to cross over finals again, playing for the WIDER CLUSTER champion title!

The day was Wednesday 11 June at the Benowa netball courts. At 9:45am we cruised over in a Maxi Taxi.  Spirits were high and I was ready for whatever happened.  The competition comprised of a series of matches, each school competing for a place in the Grand Finals.  Our first game was against Benowa HS – these girls were mostly Year 11 and 12 students – some were tall! QAHS girls easily defeated them in an awesome game scoring 42 goals to 30.  We were through to the finals, playing for first or second place in the entire competition – we were surprised and psyched, all at the same time.

The school to beat next was Coombabah HS who in their previous game scored 80 goals to 9 – we were worried! The girls took the court after losing the call for first centre pass.  We managed a few goals in the first quarter, and by half time it was still possible to come back from the 10 goal lead Coombabah had already.  By the end of the last quarter the girls were exhausted and over 20 goals down – we had come SECOND in competition, better than 2013 when we placed 4th.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank both Netball teams, Mr Fox the 15’s coach and all the wonderful parents who came to watch their daughters play, for their ongoing commitment and professionalism throughout the semester during Interschool Sport.  I would like to make a very special mention and thanks to the Open team for being such skilled players of the sport and just lovely girls to be around – I cannot express in words how proud and happy I am to have experienced, coached and umpired the games this year.
