Schools Sharemarket Game

Over the last 10 weeks, QAHS students were given the opportunity to participate in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game. Students received a virtual $50,000 which they could invest in 220 companies listed on the ASX. The prices students buy and sell at are the same prices as they would get in the live market so this is as close to real life share trading as you can get.

As a result of playing the Game students have:

  • developed their knowledge of the sharemarket,
  • learnt how to research companies,
  • discovered the importance of wise investment decisions,
  • gained a greater knowledge of economic and world events, and
  • learnt more about investing as a means to achieve future financial security.

Portfolio values fluctuated over the trading period in line with the turbulent stock market (see snapshot below), challenging students’ patients and their investment strategies.

SNAPSHOT – ASX200 (AXJO) movement over the 10 week period 9th March – 16th May 2018

A total of 18,771 syndicates took part in the game throughout Australia. The average syndicate value at the end of the trading period was $49,901.40, with 42% of syndicates being in profit.

Of the 18 QAHS syndicates (32 students) who participated, six were in profit at the end of the 10 week game and two outperformed the ASX200 (AXJO) index which gained 3.47%.

Congratulations to all students who participated!
