“On 29 July, our QAHS String Quartet consisting of Sayo Kokubun, Amy Zhou, Emily S-Matsumoto and myself Maria Saito, took part in the Gold Coast Eisteddfod – one of the largest competitions in Australia celebrating dance, drama and music, held  from August to September each year. We performed the first movement of Divertimento in F major, by the prolific and influential composer, Mozart, along with the third movement of Dvorak’s, ‘American’ String Quartet. Including a few holiday and weekend rehearsals, our quartet practiced every week on Monday afternoons. Without a mentor, in each rehearsal we worked collaboratively to enhance our performance by deciding on dynamics, bowings, and tempos, and gave each other constructive feedback to further develop our skills. On the day of the Eisteddfod, out of seven groups, our quartet placed third, receiving positive comments from the adjudicator and members of the audience. Overall, I believe this was an incredibly valuable experience, as it built teamwork and skill within our quartet, and most importantly, I enjoyed working together with these three talented musicians.”

“The Gold Coast Eisteddfod was the first time we competed together as a quartet. Our competitors included senior string quartets from other Gold Coast schools, so we were pleasantly surprised to find that after rehearsing for a short two months, we received 3rd Place in the Trio or Quartet 20 Years and Under – Strings Only Section. Overall, it was a great experience and I had a lot of fun!”  Amy Zhou, Year 12
