Australian Brain Bee Competition 2022 at the Brain Institute at University of Queensland: Tuesday 19 July
Two students, Joey Cliffe and Maria Gagic in Year 10 qualified for the second round of the Brain Bee, an international competition testing their understanding of the brain. The students were invited to tour the research labs and saw investigations involving zebra fish, drosophila and c. elegans worms. A range of tests were observed including recording brain waves and nerve function. Maria and Joey were also able to listen to the PhD students discuss their research topics and life journeys which are always inspiring, and often revealed that their pathways were more diverse than expected.
We were also lucky to hear a fascinating lecture from Thomas Suddendorf on the role of Foresight in Human Evolution. He explained how helpful the ability to be able to plan ahead and to save tools to use again in different situations was to human's ability to adapt and survive successfully.
