On Thursday 24 February the City of Gold Coast Junior Council met for the first meeting of 2022, which was held in an online format and well adapted to by all participants. 2022 will mark the 30th year of the Gold Coast Junior Council, a student leadership and civic program for young people in Years 10 and 11, from attending high schools in the Gold Coast region. The two-year program provides students with the opportunity to develop skills in the areas of communication and leadership, whilst learning about local government and community issues.
After hearing from guest speakers and completing collaborative activities, the Junior Council farewelled the 2021 Executive Committee, welcomed new Year 10 members, congratulated the 2022 Executive Committee members and announced the successful candidates for the roles of Junior Deputy Mayor and Junior Mayor. In some very exciting news, Queensland Academies Health Sciences Campus is proud to reveal that one of our own Year 11 students, Samuel Brown, was sworn in as the city's new Junior Mayor, which is a prestigious and highly coveted role. Year 11 student Mathilda Bester also joins Samuel Brown as part of the 2022 Junior Council Executive Committee. We congratulate these Year 11 students on their outstanding achievements.

As part of the inaugural meeting, the Junior Council farewelled Grade 12 QAHS student and 2021 Executive Committee member Charli Horcher, who was an enthusiastic and active participant in the 2021 program. Her articulate contributions and warm presence will be greatly missed moving forward, and we wish her the best of luck in her future leadership endeavours.
Among those welcomed as new members to the City of Gold Coast Junior Council were Grade 10 QAHS students Dante Pellegrino and Genevieve Chakuthip, as well as Anenya Kale, who is a new addition to our Grade 11 members.
