Congratulations to our QAHS Chess Team, Liza Gratchev, Woo Joon Ki, Jason Liu and Kiran Sen —who recently competed in the 2025 Term 2 Gold Coast Secondary Premier Division of the interschool chess competition. Their strong performance has secured qualification for the State Championships, to be held next term.

The Premier Division is the top tier of secondary school chess on the Gold Coast, featuring some of the most competitive players in the region. QAHS finished in third place overall, placing them comfortably within the top six teams eligible for the state-level event.

Several students stood out in individual performances:

  • Liza Gratchev scored 5 out of 7 points, placing among the top four players overall
  • Woo Joon Ki earned 4.5 points, also ranking within the top ten
  • Jason Liu contributed 4 points, helping secure the team's podium finish
  • Kiran Sen showed determination and growth, adding 2 points in this highly competitive division

Reflecting on the experience, Liza shared,

“The competition was a great challenge, and it really pushed us to think deeply and stay calm under pressure. I was proud of how our team supported one another, especially during some really tight matches. It was exciting to see our efforts pay off with a third-place finish."

She added,

“We're all really looking forward to the state qualifiers next term. It means a lot to be able to represent QAHS and test ourselves at the next level. Thanks again to everyone who encouraged and supported us—we'll do our best to make the Academy proud."

This result continues the school's strong presence in interschool chess, where students develop strategic thinking, resilience and focus through competitive play. We wish Liza, Woo Joon, Jason and Kiran all the best as they prepare for the next stage of the competition.
