Following our recent Campus News feature on QAHS students excelling in health traineeships, we are delighted to share the reflections of Year 12 student Marion Khoo, a dedicated Gold Coast Health Trainee in Occupational Therapy at Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH).

Since beginning her school-based traineeship in September 2024, Marion has gained invaluable hands-on experience in a hospital environment, deepening her passion for the Allied Health sector, particularly Occupational Therapy.

Marion's Journey into Occupational Therapy

Reflecting on her experience, Marion shared how the traineeship has been pivotal in confirming her aspirations in helping patients with injuries or disabilities regain their independence. Her interest in Occupational Therapy began in Year 10, and this traineeship has provided her with an immersive learning experience alongside experienced healthcare professionals.

"On my first day in the Allied Health OT ward, I felt quite nervous about what to expect. However, my supervisors' compassion and guidance quickly put me at ease. I was introduced to various specialised areas, including Hand Therapy, Acute Care, Lymphoedema, and Paediatrics, and learned about the unique equipment used in each specialty. A tour of the wards familiarised me with safety protocols and the roles of my supervisors, leaving me confident and eager for the journey ahead."

A Day in the Life of a Health Trainee

Marion's role in the Allied Health Occupational Therapy ward varies from day to day, offering her a well-rounded experience in different aspects of patient care and hospital operations.

"A typical workday involves restocking supplies in the Hand Therapy rooms and assisting my Paediatrics ward supervisor to ensure young patients feel comfortable before their surgical procedures. In the afternoons, I return to the Hand Therapy room to manage patients' garment orders, which keeps me engaged and contributes to the operational flow of the ward."

One of the most eye-opening aspects of her traineeship has been observing the professional interactions between occupational therapists and their patients.

"Their clear and compassionate communication fosters an environment where patients feel valued and understood, and I aspire to embody such qualities throughout my traineeship."

Making a Meaningful Contribution

Beyond gaining hands-on experience, Marion has also contributed to improving efficiency within the ward.

"A particularly rewarding moment came when I helped streamline garment order management. By organising and enhancing the tracking lists, I improved the efficiency of the ordering process, which benefited both patients and our team."

Balancing Study and Work

Balancing a traineeship with IB studies is no easy feat, but Marion has found a system that works for her.

"Managing my traineeship alongside schoolwork and personal commitments has been a challenge. However, I've tackled this by allocating specific time for my traineeship modules and maintaining open communication with my teachers about my workload. Completing assignments ahead of deadlines reduces stress and allows me time for myself."

Advice for Future Applicants

To students considering applying for the Gold Coast Health School-Based Traineeships, Marion highly recommends the opportunity.

"This experience offers invaluable practical learning in a healthcare setting, helping you develop essential skills and build professional relationships that will support your future medical career. It truly reinforces the importance of combining education with hands-on experience."
