QAHS is pleased to share the outstanding achievements of Year 10 student, Joseph Zhu, who has been recognised by the Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT) for his exceptional mathematical ability.

In February, Joseph competed in the 2025 Australian Mathematical Olympiad (AMO), an invitation-only competition extended to just 100 of Australia's top young mathematicians. His impressive performance earned him a Gold Award, placing him in the top 10% of participants nationwide. The AMO challenges students with complex, proof-based problems designed to test deep mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Following this success, Joseph was invited to compete in the 2025 Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO), which took place this week. Due to campus closure as a result of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, this didn't halt Joseph from completing the four-hour exam under video conferencing supervision. The APMO is an elite international competition, with only 25 students from Australia selected each year to compete against top young mathematicians from across the Asia-Pacific region.

Adding to his achievements, Joseph has also been selected to attend the 2025 High Performance Mathematics Selection School, taking place from 2–8 April in Melbourne. This elite program, run by the Australian Mathematics Trust, is designed to refine students' problem-solving skills and identify potential candidates for Australia's International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) team.

Joseph's selection for these prestigious programs is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and passion for mathematics. QAHS congratulates him on this incredible achievement and looks forward to following his journey. Well done Joseph!
