Six QAHS students recently demonstrated their strategic thinking, perseverance and commitment to excellence at the Gardiner Interschool Chess Tournament, held at Kings Christian College on 18 May.
Competing against approximately 300 students from across Queensland, the QAHS team achieved an outstanding result, placing 3rd overall in the Premier Division. The team consisted of Abigail Rowe, Liza Gratchev, Ryo Cowland Cooper, Woo Joon Ki, Ayden Nguyen and Joshua Cai.

Individually, Abigail Rowe was recognised as 2nd Overall Player in the Premier Division, while Woo Joon Ki received a Merit Award for achieving four wins during the competition.
Participation in interschool chess reflects the spirit of the IB Diploma Programme and the values of Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), providing students with opportunities to challenge themselves beyond the classroom, develop new skills and engage meaningfully with the wider community.
The tournament also showcased a number of IB Learner Profile attributes. Students demonstrated their abilities as Thinkers, applying logic and strategy to complex situations; as Risk-takers, competing against some of the state's strongest players; and as Balanced learners, pursuing personal interests alongside their academic commitments. Their sportsmanship and respect for fellow competitors further reflected the qualities of being Principled and Open-minded.
Congratulations to all six team members on their achievements and for representing QAHS with distinction.
