On Thursday morning, year 11 and 12 Theory of Knowledge (TOK) students had the privilege of hearing from Rachel Smith - animal ethicist and Chief Executive Office of Animal Free Science Advocacy. Rachel addressed the Academy with reference to how animals are used as scientific research tools and how the rise of non-animal research methods is being made possible due to innovations in technological scientific testing methods such as organs-on-a-chip and computer modelling of diseases and treatments.

In Theory of Knowledge, students are challenged to consider how knowledge is produced, and demonstrated themselves to be open-minded as they explored the ethical challenges in using animals for testing. They also explored the links of politics and knowledge, where government legislation, state governing bodies, universities and ethics committees engage stakeholders to steer the use of animals in scientific research. Recent changes to legislation, such as the US Food and drug Administration (FDA) to phase out the use of animals in testing were explored – demonstrating how governing bodies, as well as public social licence play an essential role in the production of scientific knowledge. Students were also encouraged to reflect on their own thinking and understanding of animals as tools of scientific research and consider their own stance on this topic.

Students who were particularly interested in the discussion are encouraged to explore more through organisations such as Animal Free Science Advocacy. We're grateful to bring these opportunities to our students, to expand their horizons as global citizens and engage with the complex and nuanced nature of knowledge production.
