Six QAHS students recently stepped into the role of STEM facilitators at Griffith University, delivering a series of hands-on chemistry workshops as part of the Solid STEM Pathways event.
Amy Cao, Eileen Chen, Demi Li, Pal Patel, and Lorraine Wong,worked with groups of primary-aged students across three workshop sessions, helping make science approachable, interactive and engaging.
The event was delivered in partnership with Griffith University's GUMURRII Unit and the Queensland Department of Education, with a focus on creating pathways into STEM for primary-aged students from diverse backgrounds.
The QAHS workshop, Matter, Density and Reactions: Interactive Session, explored states of matter, density and chemical reactions through practical activities including lava lamps and Oobleck. Working with small groups, the students guided participants through each experiment, explained the science behind what they were observing and encouraged them to ask questions and explore ideas for themselves.
The experience also gave QAHS students the opportunity to apply their own scientific knowledge in a different setting. Preparing and delivering the workshop required them to communicate complex concepts clearly, adapt activities for younger learners and take responsibility for creating a safe and positive laboratory experience.

Feedback received from Griffith University staff, the GUMURRI team and attending parents was extremely positive, particularly recognising the contribution QAHS students made in encouraging younger students to explore STEM and see where an interest in science might lead.
The workshop was supported by Mr Oliver Harris and Dr Carrie Lovitt, with their planning and preparation helping students take the session from an initial idea through to delivery at Griffith University. Thank you also to the wider Science team, including Ms Newlove, Mr Pebbles, Ms Bennetts and Mr Lal, for their support in bringing the experience together.
The day was a valuable opportunity for QAHS students to share their enthusiasm for science while supporting the next generation of young learners to build confidence, curiosity and an interest in future STEM pathways.
