Forty-two Year 8 students participating in the QAHS Brilliant Futures program stepped into the world of university science on Saturday 22 August during a hands-on Cell Biology Workshop at Griffith University.

Working in university laboratory spaces, students explored cell biology through practical activities involving microscopy, stomata, leaf structure and UV radiation. They also gained experience with scientific equipment and techniques including pipetting, centrifugation and spectrometry, while learning about laboratory safety and the careful handling of chemicals.

The workshop allowed students to move beyond textbook diagrams and investigate how scientists collect evidence, use specialised equipment and connect biological structures with their functions. It also provided an opportunity to experience university laboratory learning and explore the possibilities of future study in STEM.

Ten QAHS STEM Mentors worked alongside the Year 8 students throughout the session. They helped students interpret instructions, set up and use equipment, understand scientific ideas and participate confidently in the practical activities. The mentors encouraged questions and assisted the Year 8 students to complete their experiments. They also answered questions about QAHS and studying the IB Diploma Programme.

The workshop reflected the central purpose of Brilliant Futures: providing highly capable young students with challenging, authentic learning experiences that broaden their understanding of future STEM pathways. It also enabled the STEM Mentors to apply their own knowledge through leadership and communication to younger students.

Thank you to Griffith University for providing this valuable learning opportunity and to the QAHS STEM Mentors for their encouragement, patience and professionalism throughout the workshop.
