Our students recently attended the Empowering Young Women Leadership Masterclass at Southern Cross University, joining Year 10 and 11 students from across the region for a day of learning, reflection and connection.

Across sessions exploring leadership journeys, personal leadership brands and “future-proofing" success, students heard from accomplished women working across business, community leadership and higher education. They also had the opportunity to connect with leading Queensland female mentors - valuable access that made ideas about leadership, ambition and future pathways feel considerably more tangible.

Perhaps most valuable was the opportunity to hear the realities behind successful careers. Rather than presenting a single blueprint for success, speakers shared experiences of taking risks, navigating change, creating opportunities and developing confidence in their own capabilities.

For young women still considering who they are and what they might become, there is real value in seeing the many forms leadership can take. The message was clear that leadership need not be the loudest voice in the room; it can be thoughtful, purposeful, authentic and grounded in a willingness to contribute.

Our students left with practical insights, new connections and, importantly, an expanded sense of what might be possible for their own futures. Sometimes empowerment begins simply by seeing what is possible and recognising that you, too, belong in the room.

A sincere thank you to Mr Jarred Turner, Student Leadership Coordinator, for creating this opportunity for our students and supporting them to engage in experiences that extend their learning beyond the classroom.

And, of course, the best measure of a day like this is what our students take from it. Here are some of their reflections on the ideas and messages that stayed with them:

"Attending the Empowering Young Women Leadership Masterclass at Southern Cross University was a wonderful opportunity to hear directly from inspiring women in business and leadership. The experience offered a new perspective on how we present ourselves to others and encouraged us to think more deeply about our own values, strengths and aspirations. The business leaders captivated the audience with their genuine stories, experiences and practical advice, giving us plenty to reflect on as we consider our own future pathways. It was an inspiring and memorable experience, and I'm very grateful to have had the opportunity to attend." - Deemah Shedeed, Year 10

"The Empowering Young Women's Leadership Masterclass provided an opportunity to explore the meaning of 'leadership' and how we can develop as people as young women. The masterclass featured the stories and experiences directly from influential women who have created meaningful impact through their work. Their stories highlighted that success is rarely a straightforward journey and that the uncertainty and setbacks can be an important part of personal and professional growth. Through the Masterclass, I learnt that becoming a leader is not simply achieving a title or a position of authority, but more on understanding yourself, and using your strengths, values, and experiences to create a positive impact on others." – Sophia Zhang, Year 10
