The QAHS English Department was delighted to welcome Bell Shakespeare's Australian National Theatre Company for a dynamic performance of Macbeth: The Rehearsal. Year 11 and HL Year 12 IB Diploma Programme Language and Literature students were given an engaging opportunity to experience one of Shakespeare's most influential plays brought to life on stage – enabling our open minded IB learners to experience the thrill of live acting in our own Lecture Theatre.
Experiencing live theatre is an important component of the International Baccalaureate Language and Literature course, which aims to foster "a lifelong interest in language and literature, and a love for the richness of human expression" (February, 2026). The performance gave students a unique insight into the creative process, demonstrating how Shakespeare's text is transformed from the page into a theatrical production through performance and stage direction. Audience participation (including students and teachers!) increased engagement and allowed students to see another side of their teachers' performance abilities. The cast generously gave their time at the conclusion of the performance to answer further student questions.
The workshop-style performance directly supported students' studies of Macbeth in Higher Level Language and Literature while also deepening their understanding of dramatic conventions that underpin the study of plays across the course. Students were encouraged to think critically about how meaning is created through acting, movement, design and directorial choices, strengthening the analytical skills they will apply throughout their studies. Interesting conversations were had in classrooms following the performance.
Opportunities such as this enrich classroom learning and reflect QAHS's commitment to providing authentic, high-quality learning experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity and a genuine appreciation of literature and the performing arts.
