The YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament runs each year, providing young people aged 15–25 from all across Queensland with the opportunity to represent the issues of young people in their electorate, while learning more about legislature and government processes through a mock parliament context. We are proud to announce Year 12 student, Camilla Smatova, as a selected Youth Member for 2024. Camilla's selection is a testament to her exceptional merit, as the rigorous selection process attracts a multitude of applications state-wide, with only one position available per Queensland electorate. Camilla will represent the electorate of Broadwater, which consists of the suburbs (whole or in part) South Stradbroke Island, Labrador, Paradise Point, Runaway Bay, Sanctuary Cove, and Coombabah.
To commence her tenure in the QYP, Camilla recently participated in a three-day forum held during the Easter break at Queensland Parliament House. Here, she engaged with fellow youth members to establish committees and exchange innovative ideas. Subsequently, these committees will collaborate on drafting legislative proposals and devising and executing community engagement initiatives. The culmination of these efforts will manifest in the presentation and debate of Bills at Queensland Parliament House, during which Camilla and her peers from across the state will convene for a week-long session in Brisbane in the September holidays.
As Camilla embarks on her journey with the QYP, we extend our sincerest wishes for her success. We eagerly anticipate witnessing the personal and professional growth she will undoubtedly undergo as she seizes the opportunities with the QYP.
