Over the summer break, Year 12 student Aadi Rai had the incredible opportunity to attend the prestigious National Mathematics Summer School (NMSS) in Canberra. This highly selective programme brings together some of the country's most talented young mathematicians, with only 12 students selected from Queensland.

Held at the Australian National University, NMSS is Australia's longest-running summer school for mathematically gifted students. Over two weeks, participants engage in challenging mathematical concepts beyond the school curriculum, exploring topics such as Number Theory, Chaos Theory, Cryptography, Knot Theory, and Topology. Through a mix of lectures, small-group tutorials, and problem-solving sessions, students are encouraged to think critically and develop a deeper appreciation for mathematics.

Reflecting on the experience, Aadi described the program as an amazing experience, providing an opportunity to explore new areas of mathematics while collaborating with like-minded peers from across Australia. Aadi strongly encourages future QAHS students to pursue this opportunity.

Opportunities like NMSS are invaluable for students passionate about mathematics, and we encourage those interested to consider applying in the future. Applications for the 2026 programme will open in May 2025.

Congratulations, Aadi, on this outstanding achievement! Your hard work and dedication to mathematics serve as an inspiration to the QAHS community.
