In our last Campus News, we featured Year 12 student Marion Khoo's reflection as a Gold Coast Health school-based trainee. In this edition, we recognise the incredible work of Year 12 student Xin Yu Tan, who has embraced the challenges and rewards of working in a hospital environment. Xin Yu commenced her traineeship in Nursing at Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH), where she has gained invaluable hands-on experience in patient care.

What does a day as a trainee nurse look like?

Since starting her school-based traineeship in September 2024, Xin Yu has learned essential healthcare practices, from the fundamentals of bed-making to more advanced patient-handling tasks such as taking vital signs - including blood pressure, oral temperature, and pulse rate. This is all performed under the supervision and mentorship of a registered nurse (RN).

Her day typically begins at 7:00 am with a handover meeting, after which she pairs with an RN to assist in patient care, restock medical supplies, disinfect equipment, and ensure patients are comfortable. Throughout the shift, she engages in a variety of tasks, including helping patients with personal care, maintaining a clean and organised environment, and supporting ward staff in their daily responsibilities.

What have been the highlights of Xin Yu's experience?

Reflecting on her time at GCUH, Xin Yu highlights two particularly rewarding moments.

“Being able to perform vital signs on patients under supervision was an incredible experience, and recently, I had the opportunity to accompany my supervisor and a ward assistant to observe a brain MRI scan in a lab," she shares.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of her role has been working in a ward with elderly patients. “It's always rewarding when they share stories about their lives, careers, and cultural backgrounds during conversations. These moments remind me of the human connection at the heart of healthcare."

How does she balance school, work, and personal life?

Balancing her IB studies, personal life, and traineeship has been a challenge, particularly when assessments are due. However, Xin Yu has found a process that works - dedicating more time to the traineeship during school holidays to allow for flexibility during term time.

“Even though the shifts can be emotionally draining, I've learned to prioritise self-care by doing things I love after work and on weekends to stay mentally prepared for study," Xin Yu said.

What advice does she have for future trainees?

Xin Yu encourages other students to take up this unique opportunity.

“GO FOR IT! This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience where you gain hands-on patient care skills, build relationships with nurses and ward staff, and improve your confidence and communication. I truly love this traineeship - even if it means starting work at 7:00 am!"

Looking to the future

Xin Yu's journey exemplifies the opportunities available to QAHS students through industry partnerships, bridging academic learning with real-world application. We commend her dedication and look forward to seeing where her passion for healthcare takes her next!
