We are thrilled to announce that two QAHS teams made it to the finals of the prestigious Mayor's Technology and Innovation Awards (MTIA), held at Bond University on Thursday, 3rd October. The event, run by Experience Gold Coast in collaboration with Bond University, City of Gold Coast and Cohort Innovation Space, brought together some of the most promising young innovators from across the Gold Coast, culminating months of dedication, creative problem-solving, and teamwork.
The MTIA is all about celebrating fresh ideas, offering high school students the opportunity to come up with and refine technological solutions that can tackle real issues faced by the Gold Coast community. The students focused on key community needs in the areas of Place, Prosperity, and People, with guidance from experienced local entrepreneurs who supported the finalists in turning their ideas into viable solutions. The finalists engaged in an Entrepreneurial Bootcamp last term, which was held at Cohort Innovation Space – right in the heart of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct!
QAHS was proud to have two teams represented in the final round. Year 11 students Jason Zhu and Jae Song made up the Hydrate Hub team, while Year 10 students Alice Yao and Johanna Lee were behind Riptide Radar. Both teams delivered exceptional presentations, demonstrating creativity, community focus, and a genuine passion for innovation.
The final pitch night was held in the Princeton Room at Bond University, where students had the chance to network with peers and industry experts. The evening featured two rounds of presentations, followed by the announcement of the winners. QAHS students stood out, presenting well-researched solutions supported by prototypes and marketing strategies. Their hard work and enthusiasm were evident in every aspect of their pitch.
We extend our congratulations to both teams for their efforts and for representing QAHS so well. Their achievements reflect important aspects of the IB learner profile, including being thinkers, communicators, and risk-takers, while also demonstrating open-mindedness and a commitment to caring for their community. Special thanks also go to the mentors and staff who supported our students throughout this process - Mrs Bertwistle, Mrs Psychoulas, Mrs Rebgetz and Mrs Stevens.
Congratulations once again to all our participants for representing QAHS proudly at the event!
