Five QAHS students attended the University of Queensland's Senior Research Immersion Program at the Translational Research Institute (TRI) in Woolloongabba during Week 10 (Term 1) and the first week of Easter holidays.
Alan Jose (Year 11) and Angela Kwon (Year 12) attended the 5-day workshop from 27-31 March. Genevieve Chakuthip, Lily Cronly and Dante Pellegrino (Year 11) attended workshops from 3-7 April. Genevieve and Lily both received the SPARQ-ed LMRF Regional Student Scholarship.

Throughout the week students extracted DNA from canine cheek swabs, completed PCR on the gene segment of interest and analysed the results of the PCR via gel electrophoresis. Students also explored the sequenced DNA to determine the genotype of unknown samples and make recommendations about the applications of this knowledge to dog breeders. Students then summarised their experience in a presentation in a hybrid format, with virtual attendees joining through Zoom.
